Tattoo Aftercare
Many artists nowadays will use a form of Tegaderm/Saniderm, I often use Recovery Derm. This makes the tattoo healing process as comfortable as it can be for the client. Read the steps carefully for a successful aftercare plan.
Step One:
– Keep the wrap on for about 4-5 days. You may see blood and ink spreading underneath the wrap, this is normal. Once it’s taken off and cleaned thouroughly, it will look just as it did before.
– While under lukewarm running water, peel the corner of the wrap slowly, allowing the water underneath. This will loosen up the adhesive and the process more comfortable.
Step Two:
– Cleanse the new tattoo thouroughly with an UNSCENTED, antibacterial soap.
– Dial is a common brand used to clean tattoos, and is easily accessible.
Step Three:
– Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel.
– Refrain from using a regular towel, they may harbor bacteria that may be harmful for your tattoo.
Step Four:
– Once dry, apply a THIN layer of UNSCENTED lotion.
– I recommend Fragrance Free Lubriderm. It is easily accessible and will mosturize the tattoo while still allowing it to breathe.
-Refrain from using any petroleum based products, (Ex. A&D Ointment, Aquaphor) the tattoo needs to breathe to continue its healing process.
In Case of Irritation:
-If your skin has become irritated from the wrap, you may see your skin become red around the border of the wrap, or experience discomfort. This may happen to those who have an allergy to adhesives, or have generally sensitive skin.
-Gently peel the wrap off under lukewarm running water.
-Clean the area with an unscented soap.
-Pat dry with a paper towel, or allow to air dry.
-Once the area is fully dried, apply a very thin layer of A&D Ointment or Aquaphor.
-Make sure to let your artist know so they are aware not to use the wrap for your next tattoo.
